  • Facebook trying to be Tiktok?

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/digital/facebook-testing-immersive-video-home-page-app-1236655831/

Facebook is going to begin testing whether users of its platform want to swap their newsfeeds for video feeds.

The tech giant announced a slew of product updates Friday morning, and one of them is launching a full-screen “immersive video” player the moment a user opens the app.”

^ anybody else really not looking forward to that? as if the feed full of blah and not showing your friends stuff wasn’t bad enough already.

  • .web TLD coming soon
    Posted by @dan

    https://tech.slashdot.org/story/26/07/23/0542238/verisign-is-finally-bringing-web-domains-to-the-internet#comments

Slashdot article about the .web top level domain finally happening, 10 years after it was secured by Verisign.

That's neat and all. Did .web miss the boat now that we have hundreds of other TLDs. For that matter, do TLDs really matter any more in today's internet era where visitors are largely app based or rarely type URLs into a browser bar?

    Reaction/Like system, yay or nay?

What does everyone think about reaction icons/counts? Like, heart, applause, etc?

I'm going to disable it for now as it seems to be extra clutter. Let me know how you feel about it. Can add a reaction system back if the votes are in for it.

    Hi, I'm dan.

Thanks for joining the community. I built this place to give us all a better online community. I love conversing with people but I'm not always great with small talk, so feel free to ask away to kick off a topic.

basic background- 80's kid, elder millennial, avid reader, not a coder/developer by trade but I started programming BASIC as a kid, then moved into html and basic web development. I dabbled with webhosting for a couple years in the early 00's, but that didn't work out. My day job is working with mobile phones/tablets, etc, repairing and supporting them.

Mine has been Jurassic Park since I was a kid. It had science, technology, and the awe inspiring introduction of the dinos. Just a classic.

Today was particularly a gut-punch hearing that Sam Neill passed away.

We may be the last large group to start out in a largely analog world. I think our group was extraordinarily lucky in that we had a slow-roll of new technology and got a chance to dive into stuff before it was outdated.

  • How would you change the world?
    Posted by @dan

Let's say you had a billion dollars or super powers. What sort of things would you do?

My own big one is - give kids in need greater access to books, computers, sports, music, arts, and other opportunities. There's so much opportunity and potential that just never happens if a kid doesn't have these things. Having them early sets them up with skills and abilities that last a lifetime and might change the world.
